Capital Curling Club League Rules
Adopted September 2023 - All prior versions are obsolete
Unless otherwise provided for, the published rules of the United States Curling Association shall apply. Current USCA rules can be found at: https://www.usacurling.org/s/2022-23-USA-Curling-Rules-of-Competitionv113202371.pdf.
The Capital Curling Club will use the center-line tick rule in league play. This can be suspended if both skips agree prior to the beginning of the game.
Games should be played if at all possible. Make-ups are allowed if both skips agree, but must be played prior to the last week of the scheduled season in order to allow for playoff seeding. Teams should be at the club and ready to play at the league’s scheduled start time. Teams arriving more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time shall forfeit the match. Teams with one pending match to make up cannot schedule additional make ups and must take forfeits until the make up match has been scheduled or forfeited. Habitual forfeiting, defined as missing more than three regularly scheduled matches, can result in removal from the league at the discretion of the club’s board without a refund of fees. Teams removed from a league will also lose their grandfathered status in that league.
During the regular season, the use of non-roster substitute curlers is allowed as long as there are two roster players available. If only one roster player is available, the opposing skip has discretion over whether the game will be played or forfeited. All non-roster substitutes must throw their stones before any roster player throws. Non-roster substitutes can hold broom. For Doubles Leagues, one roster player must be present and stones may be thrown in any order. Regular substitutes should acquire a social membership to the club. All non-member substitutes must sign a waiver before stepping onto the ice.
During league playoffs, the use of only roster players is strongly encouraged. Opposing skips have full discretion over any non-roster substitutes being allowed to play. If allowed, non-roster substitutes must throw all their stones before any roster player throws.
All league games can be eight end games if time allows. Early league games should follow the last end start time rule shown on the posted schedule for that league when determining if play can continue. Late league games may continue past their scheduled end time if both skips agree. If the game is tied at the conclusion of the last allowed end or the eighth end, the game will be determined by shootout. Skips will designate any player to throw one stone with sweepers. The team that would have had the hammer in the next end, will throw second throughout the shootout. The winning team is determined by the in-play stone closest to the button. If neither team has a stone in play, the process will be repeated until a winner is determined. Late league games may play extra ends if both skips agree. League captains have the authority to end games that are running late in order to protect a later leagues’s ability to adequately prep ice.
New teams are allowed and encouraged to have coaches. Coaches may help with strategy and reading ice throughout the game. There are not a specific number of timeouts as in most/ competitive spiels. Coaches are responsible for not interfering with the pace of play.
All players are expected to honor the spirit of curling and prescribed etiquette of the game.
Good curling!
